A Healthier Twist on a Classic

  • Leaner Choice: Opting for ground chicken instead of beef significantly reduces the fat content, making these burgers a lighter yet equally satisfying option. It’s perfect for those seeking to maintain a balanced diet without sacrificing flavor.

  • Rich Flavor Profile: A carefully selected blend of garlic powder, paprika, kosher salt, and black pepper infuses the chicken and broccoli with a robust, comforting flavor that complements the richness of the cheddar cheese perfectly.

Cleverly Sneaking in Veggies

  • Easy Integration: The mild flavor of cooked broccoli complements the other ingredients, adding texture and nutrients without overpowering the burger’s taste.

Versatile Cooking Methods

Key Ingredients for Perfect Chicken Burgers

Crafting these exceptional Broccoli Cheddar Chicken Burgers begins with selecting high-quality ingredients. Each component plays a crucial role in achieving the desired flavor and texture:

Ground Chicken: The Lean Base

  • You’ll need ground chicken for this recipe. For a leaner burger, choose ground chicken breast. If you prefer a slightly richer, moister patty, ground chicken with a higher fat content (like a mix of dark and white meat) works beautifully. It provides a fantastic foundation for absorbing all the delicious flavors.
  • Ensure your ground chicken is completely thawed before mixing. Even slightly frozen chicken can introduce excess moisture, leading to soggy burgers that struggle to bind properly.

Broccoli Florets: The Hidden Gem

  • This recipe calls for broccoli florets, specifically avoiding the tougher stems. It’s vital to cook the broccoli until it’s just tender, then chop it very finely. This ensures it integrates seamlessly into the burger mixture without creating large, chunky pieces.
  • The key to success here is to thoroughly dry the cooked broccoli before chopping. Excess moisture is the enemy of a firm burger patty, so patting it dry with paper towels is a non-negotiable step.

Cheddar & Parmesan: The Flavor Boosters

  • You’ll need both grated Parmesan cheese and finely shredded mild cheddar cheese. The mild cheddar melts beautifully and distributes evenly throughout the patties, adding a creamy texture and a classic, comforting flavor. Parmesan offers a sharper, saltier kick that elevates the overall taste profile.
  • Using pre-shredded mild cheddar works well for ease of mixing, but if you have a block of cheddar, grating it yourself can yield an even creamier result.

Olive Oil: For Moisture and Richness

  • Extra virgin olive oil is a crucial addition. Lean ground chicken can dry out during cooking, but the olive oil adds essential fat, keeping the burgers wonderfully moist and tender. It also contributes a subtle, pleasant flavor.
  • Don’t skip this ingredient! It acts as a binding agent and a flavor enhancer, crucial for the burger’s texture.

Essential Spices: Unlocking Deliciousness

  • This recipe relies on simple yet effective seasonings: kosher salt, cracked black pepper, paprika, and garlic powder.
  • Kosher salt and black pepper form the base, enhancing all other flavors.
  • Garlic powder provides an aromatic depth that pairs wonderfully with chicken and cheese.
  • Paprika adds a touch of subtle sweetness and a beautiful, inviting color to the patties. Adjust to your preference, but these ratios create a perfectly balanced seasoning.

Expert Tips for Impeccable Broccoli Cheddar Chicken Burgers

Achieving the perfect Broccoli Cheddar Chicken Burger is easy when you follow these expert tips. These small details can make a significant difference in the juiciness, flavor, and structure of your patties.

Mastering Broccoli Preparation

  • Florets Only: For the best texture and to avoid tough bits, ensure you only use the tender broccoli florets, discarding any fibrous stems.
  • Cook Until Tender: Cook your broccoli until it’s just tender, but not mushy. Boiling, steaming, or even microwaving are all viable methods. Follow package instructions or cook for about 3-5 minutes until easily pierced with a fork.
  • Crucial Drying Step: This is arguably the most important tip! If you boil the broccoli, drain it exceptionally well. Then, spread the cooked florets on a few layers of paper towels and pat them thoroughly dry to absorb all excess moisture. You absolutely do not want to add wet broccoli to your burger mixture, as it will make the patties soggy and difficult to form, leading to a crumbly burger.
  • Finely Chop: Once dry, chop the broccoli very finely. Small pieces will integrate better into the ground chicken, ensuring a consistent texture and flavor distribution in every bite, and will be less noticeable for picky eaters.

Choosing the Right Cheese

  • Mild Shredded Cheddar is Key: While other cheeses might seem tempting, mild shredded cheddar cheese is highly recommended for this recipe. Its mild flavor doesn’t overpower the chicken and broccoli, and its shredded form makes it easy to mix evenly into the patties.
  • Excellent Melt: Mild shredded cheddar also melts beautifully, creating pockets of gooey cheese throughout the burger, enhancing its juiciness and flavor. Brands like Kraft mild cheddar are excellent choices for their consistent quality and melt.

Patty Formation & Chilling for Success

  • Gentle Mixing: When combining your ingredients, mix them thoroughly but gently. Overmixing can lead to tough burgers. Mix just until everything is well incorporated.
  • Uniform Patties: Form four equally sized patties. Aim for a thickness of about ¾ to 1 inch for even cooking. Make a slight indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb; this prevents the burger from bulging in the middle during cooking.
  • The Importance of Chilling: After forming, cover and refrigerate the burger patties for at least 30-40 minutes. This chilling period is crucial, especially if you plan to grill them. It allows the ingredients to bind together firmly, making the patties more sturdy and less likely to break apart during cooking, ensuring a juicy and intact burger.

Cooking for Optimal Juiciness

  • Don’t Press the Burgers: Whether grilling or pan-frying, resist the urge to press down on the burgers with your spatula. This common mistake squeezes out all the delicious juices and fat, resulting in a dry, less flavorful patty.
  • One Flip Only: For a perfect crust and even cooking, aim to flip your chicken burgers only once. Let one side cook until golden brown and well-set before carefully flipping to cook the other side.
  • Internal Temperature is Key: Always use an instant-read thermometer to check for doneness. Chicken burgers should reach an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) to be safe to eat. This ensures they are fully cooked without being overdone and dry.
  • Avoid Overcrowding: Cook burgers in batches if necessary, to avoid overcrowding your skillet or grill. Overcrowding lowers the cooking temperature and can steam the burgers instead of searing them, preventing that desirable crust.

Creative Topping & Serving Ideas

The beauty of these Broccoli Cheddar Chicken Burgers lies in their versatility. While they are delicious on their own, a selection of fresh toppings and creative serving methods can elevate your meal to a new level. Here are some ideas to inspire your next burger creation:

Classic Toppings with a Twist

Feel free to add any toppings you enjoy most. Some classic and creative ideas include:

  • Fresh Tomatoes: Sliced ripe tomatoes add a burst of juicy freshness and acidity.
  • Crisp Lettuce: Butter lettuce, green leaf, or even arugula can add a delightful crunch and peppery note.
  • Red Onions: Thinly sliced red onions provide a sharp, pungent bite that contrasts well with the mild chicken. For a milder flavor, try quick-pickled red onions.
  • Sautéed Onions: Caramelized onions offer a sweet and savory depth that’s incredibly comforting.
  • Creamy Avocado: Slices or a dollop of mashed avocado add a rich, creamy texture and healthy fats.
  • Pickles: Dill pickle slices offer a tangy, briny crunch that cuts through the richness.
  • Spicy Jalapeños: Fresh or pickled jalapeños can add a fiery kick for those who enjoy heat.
  • Sauce It Up: Don’t forget the condiments! Classic ketchup and mustard are always winners, but try something different like a homemade honey mustard, a tangy BBQ sauce, a creamy aioli, or a zesty sriracha mayo.
  • Extra Cheese: While the burgers already have cheese inside, a slice of American, provolone, or Swiss cheese melted on top during the last minute of cooking can add an extra layer of indulgence.

Beyond the Bun: Creative Serving Options

These burgers are fantastic nestled in a soft bun, but they’re equally delicious and adaptable to various serving styles:

  • Lettuce Wraps: For a lighter, low-carb option, wrap your burger in large, crisp lettuce leaves. This keeps things fresh and healthy.
  • Salad Topper: Chop a cooked burger patty and serve it over a vibrant mixed green salad with your favorite dressing for a protein-packed meal.
  • Grain Bowls: Create a hearty grain bowl with your chicken burger as the star. Combine it with quinoa or brown rice, roasted vegetables, and a flavorful dressing.
  • Open-Faced: Serve the burger on a single slice of toasted bread or English muffin with your preferred toppings.
  • Deconstructed Platter: For a fun family meal, arrange the cooked patties and all the topping options on a large platter, allowing everyone to build their own burger masterpiece.

Step-by-Step: Crafting Your Broccoli Cheddar Chicken Burgers

Making these flavorful Broccoli Cheddar Chicken Burgers is straightforward. Follow these detailed steps to ensure perfectly juicy and delicious patties every time.

Step 1: Preparing the Broccoli

  • Begin by preparing your broccoli florets. You can boil, steam, or microwave them until they are tender but not overly soft or mushy. If boiling, bring a pot of lightly salted water to a boil, add the florets, and cook for about 3-5 minutes.
  • Once cooked, immediately drain the broccoli thoroughly. This is a critical step to prevent soggy burgers. Spread the drained florets on a clean kitchen towel or several layers of paper towels. Pat them vigorously until all excess moisture is absorbed. The drier the broccoli, the better your burgers will hold together.
  • Finally, finely chop the dried broccoli florets. Aim for very small pieces, almost like a crumble, so they blend seamlessly into the chicken mixture.

Step 2: Combining the Burger Mixture

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground chicken, the finely chopped (and thoroughly dried) broccoli florets, finely shredded mild cheddar cheese, grated Parmesan cheese, extra virgin olive oil, garlic powder, paprika, kosher salt, and cracked black pepper.
  • Using your hands, gently mix all the ingredients until they are just combined. Be careful not to overmix, as this can lead to tough burgers. The mixture should be uniform.
  • Divide the mixture into four equal portions and carefully form them into patties, about ¾ to 1 inch thick. Make a small indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb to prevent it from puffing up during cooking.

Step 3: Chilling the Patties

  • Once the patties are formed, arrange them on a plate or baking sheet. Cover them tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30-40 minutes. This chilling period is crucial as it allows the fats to solidify and the ingredients to bind together, making the patties firmer and less likely to fall apart during cooking, especially if you plan to grill them.

Step 4: Stovetop Sautéing for a Golden Crust

  • If cooking over the stovetop, heat a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add 1-2 tablespoons of avocado oil (or other high-heat cooking oil) to the pan. Once the oil is hot and shimmering, carefully add the chilled burger patties to the skillet. Ensure you don’t overcrowd the pan; cook in batches if necessary.
  • Sauté the burgers for 6-7 minutes per side. Cook until they are beautifully golden brown on the outside, and the juices run clear when pierced. For absolute certainty, use an instant-read thermometer to check that the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C) to ensure doneness.
  • If adding an extra slice of cheese, place it on top of the burgers during the last 2 minutes of cooking, covering the pan to help it melt. Once cooked, remove from heat, top with your favorite additions, and enjoy immediately.

Step 5: Grilling for Smoky Perfection

  • If you opt for grilling, preheat your gas grill to a medium-high heat, approximately 400-425°F (200-220°C). Clean the grill grates thoroughly.
  • Carefully brush the grill grates with avocado oil (or another neutral high-smoke-point oil). Be cautious as oil can flare up if it touches the flame directly. Alternatively, dampen a clean kitchen towel with avocado oil, pinch the dampened towel with metal tongs, then rub the oil-soaked towel over the hot grates. This method helps prevent sticking.
  • Place the chilled burger patties directly on the prepared grill grates. Cook for 5-7 minutes per side, or until beautiful grill marks appear, and the juices run clear. Again, use an instant-read thermometer to confirm the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C). Cooking time may vary slightly depending on the thickness of your burgers and your grill’s temperature.
  • If you wish to add a slice of cheese on top, place it on the burgers during the last two minutes of grilling, closing the lid to help it melt. Remove from the grill, assemble with your preferred toppings, and serve hot.

Storage and Reheating Your Burgers

These Broccoli Cheddar Chicken Burgers are fantastic for meal prep, making your busy weeknights much easier. Knowing how to properly store and reheat them ensures you can enjoy their deliciousness for days to come.

Refrigeration Tips for Cooked Burgers

  • Airtight Container: Once cooked and cooled to room temperature, store your chicken burgers in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
  • Longevity: Properly stored, cooked burgers will stay fresh and delicious for up to 3-4 days.

Freezing Uncooked Burger Patties

  • For Future Meals: You can easily freeze uncooked burger patties for quick meals later. After forming the patties, place a piece of parchment paper between each one to prevent sticking.
  • Airtight Storage: Stack the separated patties in a freezer-safe, sealable airtight bag or container. This prevents freezer burn and keeps them fresh.
  • Freezing Duration: Uncooked frozen patties can be stored for up to 2-3 months.
  • Thawing Before Cooking: When ready to cook, thaw the frozen patties in the refrigerator overnight before proceeding with the stovetop or grilling instructions. Do not cook from frozen, as this can lead to uneven cooking and a dry texture.

Reheating Methods for Best Results

  • Stovetop Method (Recommended): For best results, gently reheat your cooked burgers in a nonstick skillet over medium-low heat. Add a touch of water (about a tablespoon) to the pan and cover it. The steam created will help moisten the burgers, preventing them from drying out. Reheat until warmed through, about 5-7 minutes per side.
  • Microwave Method (Quick Option): While not ideal for maintaining crispness, you can microwave the burgers for a quick reheat. Place a burger on a microwave-safe plate, cover with a damp paper towel, and heat in 30-second intervals until warmed through. Be careful not to overheat, which can make them rubbery.
  • Oven Method: For a batch of burgers, preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C). Place the burgers on a baking sheet, cover loosely with foil, and heat for 10-15 minutes, or until warmed through.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I grill my chicken burgers?

Absolutely! Grilling these chicken burgers adds a wonderful smoky flavor. However, it’s crucial to let the formed patties chill in the refrigerator for at least 30-40 minutes before grilling. This allows them to firm up and bind properly, preventing them from falling apart on the grates. Make sure your grill grates are clean and well-oiled to prevent sticking.

Do you have any grilling tips for chicken burgers?

Yes! Preheat your grill to a medium-high temperature (400-425°F or 200-220°C). Always brush the grill grates carefully with avocado oil or another high-smoke-point oil before placing the burgers to prevent sticking. Be mindful of flare-ups. Cook for 5-7 minutes per side, ensuring a single flip for the best crust. Most importantly, avoid pressing down on the burgers with your spatula, as this can dry them out.

How long should I cook these chicken burgers?

Cooking times vary slightly depending on the method and thickness of your patties. On the stovetop in a nonstick skillet over medium heat, expect to cook them for 6-7 minutes per side. If grilling, they typically need 5-7 minutes per side. Regardless of the method, always use an instant-read thermometer to ensure the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C) for food safety. Thicker burgers will naturally require a bit more time.

My ground chicken is still slightly frozen, is that okay to use?

No, it is not okay. Even slightly frozen ground chicken holds a significant amount of moisture, which will be released during cooking. This excess moisture will prevent your burgers from binding correctly, making them soggy and prone to falling apart. Always ensure your ground chicken is fully thawed before mixing the patties.

What type of cheese should I add on top of the burger, since there’s cheese inside?

You’re right, these burgers are already packed with delicious cheddar and Parmesan inside! They don’t strictly “need” additional cheese on top. However, if you love extra cheesiness, a slice of American or provolone cheese melts beautifully and complements the existing flavors without overpowering them. Add it during the last couple of minutes of cooking to let it get perfectly gooey.

Can I boil the broccoli, or should I steam it?

You can certainly boil the broccoli until soft. However, if you choose to boil, it is absolutely essential to drain it extremely well and then pat it thoroughly dry with paper towels. Any excess water will make your burger mixture wet and prevent the patties from holding their shape. Steaming is another excellent option as it tends to introduce less moisture initially.

Can I use frozen broccoli instead of fresh?

Yes, you can use frozen broccoli florets. Just be sure to cook them according to package directions (steaming or boiling works best) and then, critically, drain them very well and pat them extremely dry with paper towels to remove all excess moisture before finely chopping. Frozen broccoli tends to hold more water, so the drying step is even more important here.

Can I add other vegetables to the burger mixture?

Absolutely! These burgers are quite versatile. Finely shredded carrots, spinach (squeezed dry), or even finely diced bell peppers could be added for extra flavor and nutrients. Just ensure any added vegetables are finely chopped and excess moisture is removed to maintain the patty’s integrity.

Delicious Sides to Complete Your Meal

A great burger deserves equally great sides! These Broccoli Cheddar Chicken Burgers pair wonderfully with a variety of accompaniments. Here are some delectable suggestions to create a full and satisfying meal:

  • Sweet Potato Fries: A slightly healthier alternative to regular fries, sweet potato fries offer a touch of sweetness and vibrant color.
  • Corn on the Cob: Especially in warmer months, grilled or boiled corn on the cob with a pat of butter is a simple, delicious, and seasonal side.

Equipment

  • 1 mixing bowl
  • 1 nonstick skillet or gas grill

Ingredients

Broccoli Cheddar Chicken Burgers

  • 1 lb. ground chicken
  • ¾ cup broccoli florets, cooked and chopped small (florets only, no stems)
  • ½ cup mild cheddar cheese, finely shredded (heaping)
  • 2 tablespoons Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 1.5 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt (use less if using table salt)
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon paprika
  • Few turns cracked black pepper

Instructions

Prepare the Broccoli

  1. Cook your broccoli florets according to the package directions (boil, steam, or microwave until tender). If boiling, be sure to pat them thoroughly dry with a paper towel before finely chopping. It is critical to remove any excess moisture from the broccoli to prevent the burgers from becoming soggy and falling apart.

Combine the Burger Mixture

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground chicken, finely chopped (and dried) broccoli florets, finely shredded mild cheddar cheese, garlic powder, paprika, kosher salt, black pepper, extra virgin olive oil, and grated Parmesan cheese. Mix well with your hands until all ingredients are just combined. Form the mixture into four equally sized patties. Cover and refrigerate for 30-40 minutes to allow them to firm up.

Stovetop Method

  1. If cooking over the stovetop, heat a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add 1-2 tablespoons of avocado oil to the pan. Once the oil is hot, carefully add the burgers. Do not overcrowd the pan; cook in batches if needed.
  2. Sauté for 6-7 minutes per side or until the juices run clear and the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees Fahrenheit to ensure doneness. Top with your favorite toppings and enjoy.

Grilling Method

  1. Preheat the gas grill to 400-425 degrees Fahrenheit. Carefully brush the grill grates with avocado oil. Be careful because the oil can flare up if it hits the flame. Alternatively, dampen a clean kitchen towel with avocado oil, pinch the dampened towel with metal tongs, then rub the oil-soaked towel over the grates. This method also works effectively to prevent sticking.
  2. Add the burger patties to the grill and cook for 5-7 minutes per side or until the juices run clear. Use an instant-read thermometer to ensure the burgers reach an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit for proper doneness. Cooking time will vary based on the thickness of the burgers. If you decide to add cheese, place the sliced cheese over the burgers two minutes before you remove them from the grill. Add your favorite toppings and enjoy.

Notes

You’ll need cooked and finely chopped broccoli for this recipe. Make sure you only use the florets, no stems.

Cook the broccoli according to the package. If you boil the broccoli, make sure it’s well drained before chopping it. Pat it dry with a paper towel to absorb all excess moisture. You do not want to add wet broccoli to your mixture. Chop it very small!

I highly recommend using mild shredded cheddar cheese in this recipe. The mild shredded cheddar is easy to mix into the patties and melts really well. I used Kraft mild cheddar shredded cheese and it was delicious. This juicy burger recipe is a must-try.
