Discover the ultimate guide to creating the best Vegan Cream Cheese Frosting! This recipe delivers a lusciously thick, rich, and perfectly tangy frosting that’s utterly decadent and incredibly stable. Say goodbye to runny, slipping layers and hello to flawless vegan desserts, from classic Carrot Cake and vibrant Red Velvet Cake to autumnal Pumpkin Spice Cake.

For many, cream cheese frosting isn’t just a topping; it’s an essential component of their favorite desserts. Before transitioning to a vegan lifestyle, it was undoubtedly my go-to frosting, cherished for its unique balance of sweetness and a delightful, subtle tang. The creamy texture and rich flavor made it irresistible. However, the journey to replicating this beloved frosting in a vegan form wasn’t without its challenges. Like many plant-based bakers, I initially struggled. My attempts to adapt traditional recipes often resulted in a frosting that was disappointingly runny and notoriously difficult to work with, especially when attempting to create beautiful layer cakes.
I vividly recall one particularly frustrating Easter. I had lovingly baked a magnificent double-layer carrot cake, envisioning it as the centerpiece of our celebration. After carefully applying the first layer of frosting, the second cake layer, much to my dismay, decided to stage a dramatic escape, sliding right off and crumbling just moments before serving. While it still tasted wonderful, the experience was incredibly disheartening! That incident fueled my determination to master the art of stable, delicious vegan cream cheese frosting.
Today, I am thrilled to share with you a foolproof method for crafting a vegan cream cheese frosting that is not only thick and wonderfully spreadable but also remarkably stable, making it perfectly suitable for even the most ambitious layer cakes. While it requires a tiny bit more attention to detail than simpler frostings, such as a basic Vegan Vanilla Frosting, the minimal extra effort is profoundly rewarding. The result is a genuinely decadent frosting that captures all the sweet, tangy deliciousness you crave, without any dairy!

Mastering Your Vegan Cream Cheese Frosting: A Step-by-Step Guide
Creating an exceptional vegan cream cheese frosting hinges on a few crucial steps and the right ingredients. Let’s dive into the process to ensure your frosting is thick, creamy, and ready for any baking project.
Selecting Your Ingredients for Success
The foundation of this superb frosting starts with two key players: vegan butter and vegan cream cheese. Quality and condition are paramount.
- Vegan Butter: Begin with 1/2 cup (or 8 tablespoons) of high-quality vegan butter. For optimal results, I strongly recommend using vegan butter sticks, such as Earth Balance baking sticks. They tend to have a firmer consistency and less water content than tub varieties, which is ideal for frosting stability. If you must use tub vegan butter, simply measure out 8 tablespoons precisely. Crucially, ensure your butter is only *slightly* softened to room temperature, not melted or overly soft. If it’s too warm, your frosting will struggle to thicken.
- Vegan Cream Cheese: You’ll need 8 ounces of vegan cream cheese. Before adding it to your mixing bowl, it’s vital to drain any excess liquid that might be present in the container. This extra moisture is a common culprit for runny frosting. Always use the vegan cream cheese straight from the refrigerator, ensuring it is cold and firm. I’ve had great success with brands like Trader Joe’s Vegan Cream Cheese, Tofutti, Miyoko’s, or Kite Hill. However, I generally advise against using the Daiya brand for frostings, as some find it can impart an undesirable aftertaste.
The Mixing Process: Achieving Creamy Perfection
Once your ingredients are prepped, it’s time to bring them together to create that irresistible frosting texture.
- Cream the Vegan Butter: In a large mixing bowl, add your slightly softened vegan butter. Using a hand mixer or a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat the butter on medium speed until it becomes wonderfully creamy and smooth. This step aerates the butter, creating a light and fluffy base.
- Incorporate the Vegan Cream Cheese: Add the cold, drained vegan cream cheese to the bowl with the creamed butter. Beat for precisely 30 seconds to 1 minute, just until the ingredients are well combined and smooth. This is a critical point: do not overbeat! Over-mixing vegan cream cheese, especially if it’s on the warmer side, can cause it to break down and become overly runny, leading to a thin, unstable frosting.

- Add Vanilla and Powdered Sugar: Mix in the pure vanilla extract until just combined. Then, with your mixer on a low speed to prevent a powdered sugar cloud, gradually add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time. Continue mixing until the frosting reaches a thick, spreadable consistency. I typically use about 4 cups, but you might need a little more or slightly less, depending on your specific ingredients and desired thickness. The powdered sugar is key to both sweetness and structural integrity.

At this stage, your frosting should be quite thick and spreadable. However, for intricate piping work or very tall layer cakes, it might still be a touch too soft. Don’t worry, I have a game-changing trick up my sleeve to achieve ultimate stability.
The Secret to Perfectly Thick and Pipe-able Vegan Cream Cheese Frosting
This is where my ultimate trick comes into play, ensuring your frosting is not just thick, but genuinely stable and pipe-able for any decorating whim. The magic lies in the freezer, and it’s particularly effective because most vegan cream cheeses are formulated with coconut oil, an ingredient that firms up beautifully when chilled.
Here’s how to do it: Once your frosting is mixed and appears thick, but perhaps not quite firm enough for your needs, simply place the bowl of frosting into the freezer for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, remove it, give it a good stir with a spoon or spatula, and check its consistency. If it’s reached your desired thickness, it’s ready to use! If you prefer it even firmer, return it to the freezer for another 15 minutes. This chilling and stirring process works like a charm, transforming a merely thick frosting into one that is incredibly stable and perfect for piping or creating sturdy cake layers.
To illustrate the dramatic difference, observe the transformation:
This is what my frosting looked like immediately after incorporating 4 cups of powdered sugar, before any chilling. It was certainly thick and delicious, but still too soft for confident frosting or delicate piping on cakes or cupcakes:

And here it is after a total of 30 minutes in the freezer, with a crucial stir halfway through. The change is remarkable! It is SO much thicker, incredibly stable, and absolutely perfect for spreading and piping with ease:

Achieving Flawless Layer Cakes: Preventing the Dreaded Slip
A beautifully stacked layer cake is a joy to behold, but a slipping top layer can quickly turn that joy into despair. With vegan cream cheese frosting, a little extra care ensures your masterpiece remains intact and stunning.
First and foremost, it is absolutely essential that your cake layers are *completely cooled* before you even think about applying frosting. Even slightly warm cake layers will melt your carefully prepared frosting, leading to an unstable structure. Once your cakes are thoroughly cooled, apply a generous, thick layer of your chilled frosting onto the first cake layer. For an extra layer of security, place this frosted layer into the refrigerator for about 10 minutes. While it chills, keep the remaining frosting cold in the fridge as well. This brief chilling period allows the first layer of frosting to firm up, creating a sturdy foundation. After 10 minutes, remove the base layer, carefully place your second cake layer on top, and proceed to frost the rest of the cake as desired.
Another critical consideration for cakes and cupcakes frosted with vegan cream cheese is proper storage. Due to the coconut oil content in most vegan cream cheeses, this frosting is not particularly stable at room temperature. If left out for extended periods, it will soften, become melty, and you’ll quickly find yourself with a messy, collapsed dessert. To maintain its beautiful texture and prevent any unfortunate incidents (like that dreaded slipping top layer!), you must store your frosted creations in the refrigerator. Just be aware of this characteristic and keep your delicious vegan treats chilled until ready to serve.
Essential Tips: How to Prevent Vegan Cream Cheese Frosting from Being Runny
Let’s quickly recap the golden rules for ensuring your vegan cream cheese frosting is always perfectly thick, creamy, and never runny:
- Butter Condition is Key: Always ensure your vegan butter is only slightly softened, never melted or overly warm. The firmer it starts (within reason), the better your frosting’s structure will be.
- Cold and Drained Cream Cheese: Use vegan cream cheese straight from the refrigerator and always drain any excess liquid before adding it to your mix. This eliminates a major source of unwanted moisture.
- Don’t Overbeat the Cream Cheese: Mix the vegan cream cheese with the butter only until just combined. Excessive beating can break down its structure and make it runny.
- Powdered Sugar is Your Friend: Don’t hesitate to add a little more powdered sugar if your frosting still feels too soft. It’s not just for sweetness; it’s crucial for thickness and stability.
- Embrace the Chill: If your frosting remains too soft, the freezer is your secret weapon. Chill it in 15-minute increments, stirring in between, until it reaches that ideal thick and spreadable consistency. This method works wonders due to the coconut oil in vegan cream cheese.
- Keep it Cold for Stability: After frosting your cakes or cupcakes, remember to store them in the refrigerator. This frosting performs best when kept cool, preventing any melting or structural issues at room temperature.

This recipe for vegan cream cheese frosting yields enough to generously frost about 12 cupcakes or a single 8 or 9-inch cake. For a show-stopping double-layer cake, simply double the recipe to ensure you have plenty of this delicious, stable frosting to work with.

Ingredients
- 1/2 cup vegan butter, slightly softened to room temperature (8 tablespoons)
- 8 ounces vegan cream cheese
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 4 cups powdered sugar, more if needed
Instructions
-
In a large mixing bowl, add the slightly softened vegan butter and beat with a hand mixer (or stand mixer) until creamy and smooth.
-
Drain any extra liquid in the vegan cream cheese container, add it to the bowl and beat for 30 seconds to 1 minute to combine with the butter. Do not over beat at this point, or your frosting may be too runny.
-
Beat in the vanilla to combine. With the mixer on low, gradually add the powdered sugar, 1 cup at a time, until thick and spreadable. I used 4 cups, but you may need a little more.
-
At this point, if your frosting still seems a bit too soft and runny for spreading, stick the bowl in the freezer for 15 minutes. Take it out, stir, and put it back in the freezer for another 15 minutes if needed, until a thick consistency is reached.
-
*If using between cake layers, make sure your cakes are completely cooled before frosting. After you apply a thick layer of frosting to the first layer, place the cake in the refrigerator for 10 minutes, then frost the cake the rest of the way, however you desired. Cakes frosted with this vegan cream cheese frosting are best kept in the refrigerator, as most of the cream cheese is made with coconut oil and is not very stable at room temperature. You don’t want the top layer to slip off (trust me, I’ve been there!)
Notes
- I recommend Earth Balance brand of vegan butter, baking sticks preferred. They tend to be less greasy for frostings, but I have used the tub as well just fine. If using the tub, measure out 8 tablespoons. Make sure it is not close to melty, or the frosting won’t work. Just slightly softened is what we’re going for here.
- I used Trader Joe’s Vegan Cream Cheese. Tofutti, Miyoko’s or Kite Hill would likely work. I don’t recommend the Daiya brand because I think it leaves an odd aftertaste.
- This recipe makes enough for about 12 cupcakes or (1) 8 or 9 inch cake. Double it for a double layer cake.
